Nair Potential in Chennai
Chennai Metropolitan Area is home to a sizeable population of Malayalam & Tamil speaking Nair Caste Members. Approximately THIRTY Nair Caste Organizations in various parts of the city represent the said community members. Those individuals who had taken the first- step of associating themselves with one of these organizations themselves do not come to know of other members within the same association. Moreover if one considers the whole of Chennai, community members remain divided and compartmentalized between these localized Associations. And unfortunately there has not been any constant endeavour to interlink the community members on a pan-Chennai basis. Such a move will strengthen the community leading to the betterment of material, cultural and political prospects of the community members. For making this pan-Chennai Nair Networking possible, one of the means is to form interest groups. That is forming smaller groups within the framework of the larger community. Forming a group having a specific interest is likely to facilitate fruitful interactions amongst the members of that group, and this may be leveraged to benefit the larger pan-Chennai Nair community . Therefore existing community leaders and well-wishers must take the initiative in forming such interest groups. A example is provided here to throw more light on this plan of action:- A Nair Youngster in Ambattur, who is interested in say Cricket is likely to be unaware of a fellow caste member in the same area or one who resides, say in Adayar and sharing the same interest. If the community can facilitate the getting together of ELEVEN such individuals, a cricket team could be formed. This may be extended further, and there can be friendly matches between the various associations. Likewise there are many other activities and which the Nair youngsters will be interested in and gradually the community leaders in Chennai must encourage such individual groupings to be formed to bring the community together. To kick-start this programme of forming various interest groups, sufficient data or information has to be collected from members and towards that a survey is being conducted. It is desired that community elders who are family heads must take part in this survey and encourage each member in the family to take part too. The relevant portions of the data thus collected will be shared among the community leaders representing various Karayogams in Chennai and the participants.
Necessity of such Surveys.
In most Nair Associations across Chennai, the average age of the members is 55 plus. The Associations are not able to attract youngsters and those below 55 years. For kindling the interest and attracting younger age groups to the associations, suitable and innovative programmes has to be formulated in which they can participate. To formulate various programmes, the associations must know the likes and interests of this younger generation. And surveys like this will serve this purpose.
Not an Exhaustive List
The areas of Interest mentioned in the survey is by no means exhaustive. Members having other interests and not listed in this survey may give their own preference, for which option is provided in the survey.
